Leadership

Mr S Herbert
Headteacher/ Safeguarding Lead

I came to work in Barrow as a teacher nearly twenty years ago and never left! It is a wonderful honour to be Head of St George’s School and I love working with both children and adults, seeing them achieve their potential and enjoying school life. In my spare time, I like spending time with my family, reading, listening to music and enjoy going to watch football.
Mrs K Stringer
Deputy Headteacher - Class 2 teacher

I am the subject leader for maths and I am also an SLE (Specialist Leader in Education) for the county. I am passionate about teaching and love working at St. George's School. I enjoy kayaking, reading, cooking and geocaching in my free time (although not simultaneously!). I love spending time with my family.
Mrs S Craig
Assistant Headteacher - Class 3 teacher

I have a large family and love to spend as much time as possible, supporting their interests and having fun. I became a teacher later on in life and feel incredibly proud to be a member of the team at this wonderful school.

Teaching Staff

Mrs H Whitworth
Special Educational Needs Coordinator

My role in school is to coordinate the support for children with additional needs. I work with staff in school, as well as people from outside school to help support the most vulnerable learners. I love getting out and about in the Lake District and in Scotland. I enjoy walking and mountain biking, canoeing and camping. Spending time with my family is also really important to me.
Mrs L Ellis
Class 6 teacher

Life is hectic between juggling the needs of 29 year 6 children and my 2 boys at home. Outside of school, the majority of time is spent on the sideline of a football pitch, cheering on my boys. When I do have some "me" time, I enjoy running, reading and catching up with family and friends.
Mr A Costa
Class 5 teacher

This is my second year at St George's. I thoroughly enjoy working with our excellent staff and wonderful children. I love to teach history and science but really enjoy art work. My hobbies include football, which I run the club for, and running.
Mrs L Maclean
Teacher

I have been teaching at St. George's school for 8 years. I have 2 young children of my own and in my spare time I enjoy going walking, skiing and cooking with them. I also like going to shows and concerts, shopping and travelling with my friends when I get the chance.
Mrs L Thompson
Class 1 teacher - English Coordinator

I have been a teacher at St. George's school since 2008. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family. I also perform in musicals with a local theatre group. I love working with the fantastic children and staff at St. George's.
Mrs K Sturgeon
Reception and Class 2 teacher - Early Years Leader

I have worked at St.George's since 2003 and thoroughly enjoy being here.
In my spare time I try to stay healthy by cycling, running and walking. I enter the Keswick to Barrow walk each year and after completing a half marathon last year I was delighted to actually complete a full marathon too. I enjoy setting myself new challenges and goals to aim for, and am currently thinking about my next one!
Mrs D Smith
Nursery teacher

I'm enthusiastic and energetic. I love walking outdoors especially on Learning away days when I encourage the children to learn from our local environment and appreciate nature. They say you should never work with animals and children, to me that is the best combination. Learning needs to be first hand, fun and then it will last forever.
Mrs S Chapman
PE Lead teacher

I have a mixture of roles at St. George's. You will see me on the gate in the morning, welcoming the children to school. I organize the PE curriculum across the school and am responsible for ensuring the children take part in as many sporting/ healthy opportunities as possible. I have the privilege to plan weekly Outdoor Learning days for pupils from Nursery through to Year 6. I also cover PPA for Reception Class, Y2 and Y3. My hobbies include open water swimming and walking in the mountains. I love to be outdoors.
Miss H Bacon
Class 4 teacher

I love travelling and enjoy sharing my experiences of living in Africa and other places with the children in my class. I believe that people who read a lot are smart, interesting and fun so I try to read as much as possible and encourage children to do the same. I love being outside in our beautiful scenery. At the weekends I go sailing and walking with my family.

Mrs L Exley

I enjoy spending time with my family as much as I can. I like to go to the gym and walking my elderly dog. I enjoy walking in the Lake District with my husband to have some peace every now and again.

Mrs M Higgins
Office Manager

After working for a long time in the school office I have recently reduced my weekly school hours to enjoy some family time. I have two children who live away from home and an aged dog, who still needs to be walked several times a day. I love working with the children in the school garden and the various after school clubs we have shared over the many years.
Mrs L Smith
Secretary

Having worked as a mid-day supervisor in the school for many years, presided in the office for last 12, it has become something of a shock and pleasure to see generations of the families come through school. My own children attended and now their children (my grandchildren) come to our wonderful school. In my (not too many) spare hours, I like to complete crosswords and socialise with friends.
